Lap of The Nurburgring: Yesterday & Today

Nurburgring '1967 [TEAM LOTUS]

2005

2007

The Nürburgring, known as simply "the Ring" by enthusiasts, is the name of a famous motorsport race track in Nürburg, Germany, built in the 1920s around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel mountains, which is about 70 kilometres south of Cologne and 100 kilometres northwest of Mainz. Originally, the track featured four track configurations: the 28.265 km long Gesamtstrecke ("Combined Loop"), which in turn consisted of the 22.810 km Nordschleife ("Northern Loop"), and the 7.747 km Südschleife ("Southern Loop"). There also was a 2.281 km warm-up loop called Betonschleife, around pits area. Between 1982 and 1983 the start-finish area was demolished to create a new GP-Strecke, and this is currently used for all major and international racing events. However, the Nordschleife is still in use; nicknamed The Green Hell by Jackie Stewart, it is widely considered the toughest and most demanding purpose-built race track in the world.

The 12th Annual Urban Wheel Awards Co-Hosted By Rosie Perez - Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 @ 5PM - Detroit, Michigan

Urban Wheel Awards site: www.urbanwheelawards.com
On Wheels Inc site: www.onwheelsinc.com

Acclaimed actress Rosie Perez, currently starring on Broadway in The Ritz, and Kevin Frazier, "Entertainment Tonight" correspondent and weekend anchor, will co-host the 2008 Urban Wheel Awards.

Considered the Academy Awards of the car industry, the Jan. 15 event's theme is Fashion, Stars and Cars.

The feisty Perez made her feature film debut in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" and earned an Oscar nomination for "Fearless. She also was the choreographer for the Fly Girls on the TV series, "In Living Color."

Frazier, who worked as an anchor at Fox Sports Net and later at ESPN, where he hosted "Sports Center," said, "The Urban Wheel Awards is the only event that brings together the worlds of the entertainment and automotive industries, and I am looking forward to co-hosting this year. It's going to be an exciting event."

The show honors pioneering automotive industry leaders who transcend the mainstream and embrace diversity to create products and services that appeal to a larger customer base. The star-studded awards forum recognizes the top African-American, Asian-American and Latino executives in the automotive and ancillary industries.

Presented during Press Week of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, UWA will be at the elegant Fox Theatre.

Also on hand will be supermodel and TV series host Tyson Beckford. Beckford, who is of Jamaican and Chinese ancestry, became a household name as the main model for the fashion house of Ralph Lauren. Having graced countless billboards, been featured in numerous ads, and strutted down catwalks worldwide, Beckford hosts the automotive series "Fine Tuned" on the Speed Channel.

Our theme this year is Fashion, Stars and Cars, and Tyson epitomizes each aspect -- he's a top fashion model, a star and hosts his own car show on TV," noted UWA creator Randi Payton, CEO and founder of OnWheels Inc. "We're delighted to have him take part in this year's event. It's going to be a great show."

Said Beckford: "Cars have always been a passion of mine and I am honored to be asked to present at the Urban Wheel Awards. Throughout my career I have always worked to have diversity be embraced -- and that's what the UWA does."

The 2008 Washington Auto Show: Charity Preview and Congressional Gala

2008 Washington Auto Show website: www.washingtonautoshow.org

Winning (1969) - Paul Newman Joanne Woodward Robert Wagner

Saw this movie on DVD over the weekend. Never saw it before. The musical score by Dave Grusin is really very good. To see the old Formula Cars from 1968-1969 was a real treat.

Storyline from DVD:

Fast cars, a fast romance and a behind-the-scenes look at the world famous Indy 500 -- Winning has it all. It stars Paul Newman as Frank Capua, a hotshot race car driver who will do anything to win. However, this obession nearly causes him to lose his wife, Elora (Joanne Woodward), and his friendship with arch-rival Luther Erding (Robert Wagner) along the way.

Released in 1969, Winning features a believable personal drama, spectacular footage of the 1968 Indy 500 with its famous 17-car pileup and a biting look at the people who make their living in the fast lane. It also marks the screen debut of Richard Thomas, who went on to become television's John-Boy of The Waltons.

The 2008 Washington Auto Show: "Engineered for the Future"

GM Vice President Mark R. LaNeve to Open Washington Auto Show
Dynamic Auto Industry Leader Headlines Five-Day Showcase

WASHINGTON, D. C. (Nov. 7, 2007) - In a joint statement, The Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association (WANADA) and the Washington Automotive Press Association (WAPA) today announced that Mark R. LaNeve, General Motors North America vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing, will deliver the keynote address to the Washington Auto Show®: "Engineered for the Future" during International Media Day on Jan. 22, 2008, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

LaNeve is expected to talk about GM's transformational performance in a challenging industry environment and the latest environmental and technological advances in the company's product portfolio. His speech is scheduled for noon, following morning press conferences as part of Media Day activities.

"We are proud to host Mr. LaNeve, who has had great success at Cadillac and is considered one of today's most dynamic auto executives," said John Ourisman, principal, Ourisman automobile dealerships and show chairman. "This year's show will explore what it means to be 'engineered for the future,' from innovations in automotive design to green technology. As General Motors celebrates its 100th anniversary, Mr. LaNeve will offer a unique perspective on what lies ahead."

Kimatni D. Rawlins, president of WAPA, added "On behalf of the Washington Automotive Press Association we welcome the leadership and acumen Mark LaNeve brings to the automotive world and respectfully welcome his keen insight on the future of this industry."

Mark R. LaNeve was appointed General Motors North America vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing on March 1, 2005. He had served as GM North America vice president of marketing and advertising since September 1, 2004.
In May 2001, LaNeve was named general manager of Cadillac, returning to GM and Cadillac, where he began his career, following a stint as president and chief executive officer at Volvo Cars of North America, Inc. (VCNA). He left GM in 1997 to become vice president of marketing at VCNA. Prior to leaving GM, he was brand manager for the Pontiac Bonneville and held several sales and marketing positions at Cadillac between 1981 and 1995.

During LaNeve's tenure as general manager, Cadillac committed to a new design direction, launched eight new vehicles including the popular XLR luxury roadster, and introduced a successful ad campaign featuring the music of Led Zeppelin. In LaNeve's first full year heading the division, Cadillac sales rose 16 percent and, in 2003, reached their highest level in 13 years; in July 2004 the division achieved its best monthly sales since 1990. LaNeve's success with the Cadillac brand was recognized and rewarded in 2003 when he was named "Grand Marketer of the Year" by Brandweek magazine. He was singled out as one of Ad Age magazine's "Power Players" of the year in 2006.

Born in 1959, LaNeve is a native of Pennsylvania and holds a bachelor's degree in business communications from the University of Virginia, where he was an Academic All-American football player. He is heavily involved in groups supporting children with autism and other developmental disabilities, and was named to the board of directors of Autism Speaks in 2007.

The 66th staging of the Washington Auto Show will bring more than 700 new cars, trucks, mini-vans and sport utility vehicles from over 42 domestic and import automakers to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

The 2008 Washington Auto Show: "Engineered for the Future" dates and hours: Wednesday & Thursday, Jan. 23 and 24, 10 AM - 9 PM; Friday & Saturday, Jan. 25 and 26, 10 AM - 10 PM; Sunday, Jan. 27, 10 AM - 6 PM.

Winning Tickets To My First NASCAR Race! The Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway with WHUR!

-- WHUR 96.3 FM HOWARD UNIVERSITY RADIO --

WHUR, one of my favorite radio stations of all time while growing up in D.C. and still to this day, recently launched an on-air campaign, encouraging listeners to e-mail or fax in “Five Fast Reasons” detailing why we would like to attend the NASCAR Pennsylvania 500 Nextel Cup. This was a chance to actually go to a real live NASCAR race. Something I have been wanting to do for quite a while now.

WHUR actually formally announced its partnership with the NASCAR diversity initiative last June 2006, at the National Press Club which I read about and was quite excited to hear the news. WHUR is actually making history, becoming the first African-American radio station to participate in such an initiative. Last year they also launched thier first contest to take listeners who were fans of NASCAR. I so wanted to go last year but for whatever reasons I wasn't able to follow up in time to get a chance to go. I told myself "Next year! God willing!" ;)

So this year I went for it! And in time! ;) I filled out my "five top reasons", said a lil' prayer before I clicked "send" and hoped I would hear my name called two weeks later. On Saturday, July 21st Mr. C, host of WHUR's popular “Time Tunnel” Saturday Ole School R&B program called my name during his final hour. I was in the last group to be called! Was a brotha happy? A brotha was elated! :)

I was blessed with being one of 20 lucky listeners (a total of 40 listeners guests included) of Howard University’s WHUR 96.3 FM who won tickets to attend the NASCAR Pennsylvania 500 Nextel Cup in Pocono, Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 5th, 2007!

WHUR has become an active part of a nationwide program to increase minority participation in the United States’ largest spectator sport. The partnership has included an extensive on-air campaign with interviews of NASCAR drivers and a trip in June 2006 and August 2007 to Pocono Raceway for 40 WHUR listeners. For most of us, it was our first NASCAR experience. Thanks again, WHUR!

-- JOE GIBBS RACING (JGR) --

This unique opportunity was due in part to the station’s diversity initiative with NASCAR, Joe Gibbs Racing and Pocono International Raceway to introduce more minorities to the world of racing.

Joe Gibbs Racing (also known as JGR) is a group of NASCAR racing teams owned by Joe Gibbs, who first started racing on the NASCAR circuit in 1991. The 2007 lineup of drivers associated with Joe Gibbs Racing includes NASCAR Championship winner Tony Stewart, J. J. Yeley, and Denny Hamlin. The team is headquartered in Huntersville, North Carolina, which is near Charlotte.

-- MARC DAVIS, JOE GIBBS RACING (JGR) --

WHUR was also the primary sponsor of car #92 driven by 17-year-old Joe Gibbs Development Driver Marc Davisfor the June 2 NASCAR Busch East Series Race in South Boston, Virginia. Also WHUR will sponsor Marc Davis at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware on Friday, September 21st, 2007. Complete with a WHUR racing car and WHUR uniformed pit crew! How cool is that?

NASCAR’s initiative, the Drive for Diversity Program, helps give female and minority drivers a chance to get sponsored by established racing teams. Eight drivers and 12 crewmembers are chosen to receive help from the program for a year. Marc graduated the program last year and is now in his 2nd year of a six-year deal with Joe Gibbs Racing.

-- PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PENN 500 AT POCONO RACEWAY --

Some of the highlights of this trip for me was #1 - Hearing That I Won!, meeting the other winners who were also NASCAR Fans, the very comfortable bus ride to The Poconos with cool WHUR music and great movies handpicked by radio personality Tony Richards, Seeing The Poconos (had not seen them since a radio remote I did in 1995), The Entrance To The Stadium, Access To The Pit Stop, Meeting Joe Gibbs Racing Team President and Gibbs’ oldest son, J.D. Gibbs & The Tour of the Official Trailer. Other highlights included The Terrace Club Seats, The All You Can Eat Food Buffet, The Race, The Bus Ride Home, Riding Side by Side with the Convoy of NASCAR Trucks Taking The Drivers and Crews To Thier Next Stops, Getting Back Home at Midnight! lol! ;) Seeing this race on ESPN the next day with the complete coverage, excellent camera shots and highly interesting commentary.

-- CHRIS TUCKER --

Another highlight of this trip was the surprise appearance of seeing Chris Tucker who arrived in the Pit Stop two trailers down from us at the DLP HDTV/"Rush Hour 3" sponsored trailer. Their driver was Tony Raines in the DLP RaceCar #96. The manufacturer of Tony's car is Chevrolet. The Car Owner is Bill Saunders. The Team is Hall of Fame Racing and the Crew Chief is Brandon Thomas. Chris Tucker came by the DLP trailer for a tour as well. He was the Grand Marshall of the race and was the point man to announce the legendary "Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!" Chris was there also to promote his new movie Rush Hour 3. Here is a great article on Chris Tucker's Pocono Raceway appearance: mcall.com. Also see this great interview Chris did with NASCAR: nascar.com

-- THOUGHTS ON THE PRESENT & FUTURE STATE OF NASCAR & THE NEED TO DIVERSIFY --

There were several things that came to mind as I watched the race and observed the large crowd of Nascar fans. NASCAR truly has to diversify to achieve the next level. There needs to be more teams of color across the board. African-American, Latino, Asian, you name it. Another thing that came to mind is it's obvious that NASCAR has fans across the board of all races and nationalities so the pit crews and teams really should be reflective of that. What will it take to make more African-Americans come out to see NASCAR races? We already know people of every nationality watch it at home. Does NASCAR need a Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan of the racing world who would electrify the sport even more than it is now? Time will tell. I do applaud NASCAR's Drive For Diversity program all the way. It's a start in the right direction.

-- MANY THANKS! --

Thanks again to WHUR, NASCAR, Joe Gibbs Racing and the folks who assisted us at the Pocono Raceway! This was a chance of a lifetime and I am eternally grateful!

Earthrace: World Record on Turbo

From turbo.discovery.com:

Discovery's Turbo.com Offers Extensive Coverage of 'Earthrace' – The World's Most Ambitious Powerboat Race
Discovery's new multi-platform brand TURBO, which offers entertainment for viewers who love all things motorized, is the online destination of the ground-breaking "Earthrace," offering extensive coverage and exclusive video online at Turbo.com. Earthrace is an event promoting the sustainable use of resources and featuring a high-speed, alternative-fuel powerboat set to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe.

"At TURBO, we feature everything for the vehicle enthusiast, and increasingly our audience and partners have shown an interest in motorized vehicles using alternative fuels," said Clint Stinchcomb, EVP and General Manager, HDTV and New Media, Discovery Communications. "Earthrace is a showcase of environmentally friendly technologies, such as low-emission engines, but it also happens to feature one of the coolest-looking boats ever imagined. Powerboat fans and anyone interested in new green technologies will have a chance to see both in action online."

Earthrace content available at Turbo.com includes:
Exclusive video shorts providing an overview of the project as well as details on the boat construction, boat technologies, bio-diesel fuel, life on the tour for the crew, etc.
Daily blogs from the boat captain and the crew answering questions from the race.
Regular updates of the race’s progress with a map of the globe showing the team’s route.
Written articles covering the Earthrace project, boat specifica'ions, bio-diesel, bio-fuels, the race and race rules.
A wave-piercing simulation and weather forecasts along the race’s path.
An interactive display of the boat detailing all the specifications using CAD drawings.
Photo galleries of the boat as well as team member bios and photos.
Circumnavigating the globe represents the pinnacle of powerboat challenges, and at 24,000 nautical miles, is also the world's longest race. The current record of 75 days was set by British boat Cable & Wireless in 1998. Earthrace aims to smash this record by completing the voyage in less than 65 days, and will mark the first time in history that an official UIM Powerboat record will be attempted using renewable fuel.
